SR 20 North Cascades Highway reopened at noon today (Aug. 22) between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (milepost 148-157) after having been closed since Aug. 4 for fire activity and then a mudslide.
See below for more details!
WSDOT
·
IT'S BACK! SR 20 North Cascades Highway reopened at noon today (Aug. 22) between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (milepost 148-157) after having been closed since Aug. 4 for fire activity and then a mudslide.
Before you start your engines, a few things to know:
-Fire crews continue to work in the area in response to the Easy Fire and a 35 mph advisory speed zone has been posted between milepost 150 and 154.
-Please do not pull over or attempt to pass through this area and remain alert for fire and maintenance vehicles exiting and entering the roadway.
-Beginning 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, there will be flagger-controlled traffic with a pilot car between milepost 150 and 154 so maintenance crews can continue to clear basins and restore drainage. The road will remain open without a pilot car during non-working hours.
Thank you to our crews for all of their work to clear ~7,000 tons of material after a mudslide buried sections of the road on Aug. 11 following a rainstorm. We are grateful for all of your hard work!

View the live virtual community briefing on the Pioneer and Easy Fires Information Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61560760893080. Please submit questions in advance to 2024.pioneer@firenet.gov or via Facebook Messenger.
CURRENT SITUATION: The Easy Fire continues to hold within it’s established footprint though some areas of scattered heat remain. The rainfall on Saturday night was helpful in cooling lighter fuels in open areas on the fire but failed to saturate the ground in the more heavily timbered areas. Heat was found in the heavier fuels of the northern and western edge of the fire and were cooled by helicopter water bucket drops. Crews worked to remove dead and down trees to reduce the possibility of spot fires along Highway 20 and to reinforce the highway as a holding line for the fire. They have mopped up 100 feet in from the highway along the containment line. Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) continued to find heat in the Swamp Creek drainage where access is limited due to steep terrain and over head hazards. Helicopters continue to support with bucket drops.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Firefighters continue to hold and improve holding features on the southern portion of the Easy Fire. Firefighters will continue to utilize unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to fly over the fire footprint to detect hot spots and inform firefighters of where to focus their efforts. Resources will continue to support Washington Department of Transportation in the removal of rocks, mud and tree debris along Highway 20. Firefighters remain ready to assist with any initial attack on potential new fires that may result from recent lightning in the area.
WEATHER and SMOKE: Today will be sunny with a slight breeze with a very slim chance of thunderstorms. Temperatures will be in the higher 70s or lower 80s and will remain within the monthly average temperature range throughout the week. The likelihood of thunderstorms on Monday night and into Tuesday increases to 55% with higher chances of rain continuing throughout the week. A smoke outlook for the Pioneer and Easy Fires is available at: https://outlooks.airfire.org/outlook/f79a6d6d.
CLOSURES: Highway 20 is closed in both directions between Granite Creek (Mile Post 148) and Rainy Pass (Mile Post 157): Stay up to date at wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has closures in place for trails within the fire area, for more information visit Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest - Alerts & Closures (usda.gov). This closure includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Campfires are prohibited. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place over the fire: https://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_4_6779.html. Unauthorized drone activity is prohibited under the TFR.
EVACUATIONS: There are no evacuations in place for the Easy Fire. Anyone recreating in the area should be vigilant of surroundings and stay out of closed areas.

Easy Fire Update
August 18, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 2,130 acres (no IR)
Start Date: July 17, 2024
Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA
Containment: 29%
Personnel Assigned: 246 Cause: Lightning
Resources Assigned: 6 crews, 12 engines, 6 water tenders
CURRENT SITUATION: The fire has been largely holding within its existing footprint in recent days. Yesterday firefighters utilized an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) equipped with infrared technology to detect any areas of the fire with remaining heat that might contribute to future fire spread. Helicopters dropped water on the fire to cool those hot spots. Firefighters on the ground assessed opportunities to work closer to the fire’s northern edge but were limited by high concentrations of snags, standing dead trees, which can fall and kill or injure firefighters working in the area. The fire is also burning on extremely steep slopes where burning logs can roll downhill, spreading the fire downslope and further threatening firefighter safety.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Firefighters will continue to take opportunities to cool hot spots where possible given the steep terrain, potential for rollout, and abundant snags. Helicopters will support operations with strategic water drops where needed to remove heat from the fire’s edge and limit the potential for fire spread. Along the Highway 20 corridor, firefighters will continue to remove debris and mop up and secure the fireline.
WEATHER and SMOKE: Yesterday’s warmer and drier conditions were followed by overnight thunderstorms and rain over the fire area late in the evening and early morning hours. There is potential for additional thunderstorms this afternoon.

Easy Fire Daily Update
August 9, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 1754 acres | Start Date: July 17, 2024 | Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA | Containment: 0% Cause: Lightning | Resources Assigned: 185
CURRENT SITUATION: The fire remains on the northeast side of State Route 20, burning in timber on extremely steep slopes between Mebee Pass and Mount Hardy. Single tree torching may produce short-range spotting up to half-a-mile downwind. Crews have wrapped the Washington Pass SnoTel site and have installed sprinklers and hose line.
TODAY: A red flag warning is in effect for the Easy Fire and portions of western slopes of the Washington Cascades for Friday and Friday night for scattered lightning and gusty outflow winds. With expected wind gusts of 40 mph, firefighters may be forced to take a tactical pause during those events. Storms will start off dry but may bring wetting rains. Of primary concern to fire managers is the possibility of new starts and erratic winds that could rapidly escalate fire behavior. The fire will continue to finger uphill above Swamp Creek toward Mount Hardy with the potential for spotting over the ridgetop into the headwaters of the Methow River.
WEATHER AND SMOKE: Thunderstorms on Friday will start off dry with potential for new fire starts. Storms will slowly transition wet with the potential for heavier rain cores to produce upwards of a quarter of an inch. If these heavier rain cores fall over the Easy Fire, there is concern for small debris flows. The Easy fire will continue to experience light southeast winds on Friday then transition to northwest winds in the evening and through the day on Saturday with afternoon temperatures remaining in the 70s and 80s.
Expect good to moderate air quality across most of the communities in the Methow Valley and in the Lake Chelan area on Friday, with periods of smoke possible in the late afternoon and evening. Stehekin will likely experience moderate smoke throughout the day, while Omak and Brewster should have good air quality.
CLOSURES: State Route 20 is closed in both directions between Granite Creek (MP 148) and Easy Pass Trailhead (MP 157): https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/. State Route 20 will remain closed through the weekend as crews continue working to mitigate hazards. Washington Department of Transportation will reevaluate conditions on Monday August 12, 2024. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has closures in place for trails within the fire area: https://bit.ly/EasyFireClosures. This closure includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Easy Fire Daily Update
August 8, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 1754 acres | Start Date: July 17, 2024
Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA | Containment: 0% | Cause: Lightning
Resources Assigned: 185 |
CURRENT SITUATION: Warm and dry conditions with increased winds have produced very active fire behavior along the southeast side of the fire resulting in areas of torching and active spread on the lower right flank. As interior fuels continue to burn down, there will be a general increase in fire behavior resulting in active fire spread. Heavy fuels will continue to retain heat due to seasonal dryness and serve as potential ignition sources as warming and drying occurs.
TODAY: Crews will continue removing trees and debris along State Route 20 to reinforce the fire break along the road in an effort to keep the fire north of the highway. On the southeast flank, a combination of aviation and hand crews are working in the Swamp Creek area evaluating handline locations to keep the fire out of that drainage. On the northwest side of the fire, resources are reinforcing through handline construction an unnamed natural barrier to halt the fire’s northwesterly spread.
WEATHER AND SMOKE: Warm and mostly dry conditions will be in place through Friday. Winds will be light out of the east and southeast at speeds of 6 to 10 mph. There is a 10 percent chance for afternoon thunderstorms on Thursday increasing to 50 percent on Friday. Any storms that impact the fire will bring a threat of gusty outflow winds, heavy downpours, and lightning.
Expect winds out of the east to scour the smoke and improve air quality across most of the communities east of the Pioneer and Easy fires in the morning. As winds shift to out of the northwest, they will bring light to moderate levels of smoke from regional fires to communities in the Okanogan Valley and Chelan area overnight.
Please visit www.airnow.gov more information about smoke and air quality.
CLOSURES: State Route 20 is closed in both directions between Granite Creek (MP 148) and Easy Pass Trailhead (MP 157): https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has closures in place for trails within the fire area: https://bit.ly/EasyFireClosures. This closure includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail.
Visitors recreating in the area should be vigilant of surroundings and stay out of closed areas.

Easy Fire Update
August 3, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 751 acres
Start Date: July 17, 2024
Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA
Containment: 0%
Personnel Assigned: 194 Cause: Lightning
Resources Assigned: 5 crews 10 engines
California Incident Management Team 15, led by Incident Commander Tom Clemo assumed command of operations on the Pioneer Fire at 6:00 am this morning.
CURRENT SITUATION: Yesterday’s hot, dry, unstable weather conditions led to an observable increase in fire activity. The Easy Fire is burning in extremely steep terrain where burning logs can roll downhill, further spreading the fire downslope. Crews continued fireline preparation for future strategic firing operations along control line to State Route 20. Yesterday firefighters monitored State Route 20 overnight for any trees or debris that could pose a risk to public traffic and worked to keep the fire footprint above the highway. Firefighters were unable to conduct planned strategic firing operations due to limited aerial resources.
Today: Crews will continue full suppression tactics and activities along State Route 20 to protect the highway.
A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place for all aircrafts not involved in wildfire suppression operations. Do not fly a personal drone over or near the Easy Fire. Any incursions create a safety hazard to fire aircraft and require air operations to stop and would be a violation of Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
Expect traffic delays as firefighters continue removing debris from the roadway and conduct full suppression tactics on the Easy Fire. Please do not stop or pull over between mileposts 148-157. The highway remains open, watch for pilot cars escorting vehicles through mileposts 148-157 from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
With wildfire and firefighting operations still active, the highway may need to close again on short notice. Be sure to check https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/ for the latest information on State Route 20.
WEATHER: Temperature will cool slightly today but remain in the low 100s. Forecasts predict partly cloudy skies with continued hot, dry, unstable weather conditions. Winds will be 1-4 mph and increase to 5-10 mph after 9:00 a.m.
CLOSURES: The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has closures in place for trails within the fire area: https://bit.ly/EasyFireClosures. This closure includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Easy Fire Update August 2, 2024
Northwest Team 3 is preparing to transition management of the Pioneer and Easy Fires to California Team 15 on Saturday at 6:00 am. The incoming team was briefed yesterday on the current situation and operational objectives and today will “shadow” Team 3 to ensure a smooth transition.
CURRENT SITUATION: Yesterday, hotter temperatures led to increased fire activity with isolated flare ups and continued smoldering in the fire area. Easy Fire is burning in extremely steep terrain where burning logs can roll downhill, further spreading the fire downslope. There was active fire burning near State Route 20; however, crews successfully cooled fire activity near the highway with assistance from water bucket drops from helicopters. Crews continued to prepare areas for future strategic firing operations and improved handlines in the higher elevation areas on both the south and the north side of the Easy Fire.
On State Route 20, please be advised there are ongoing firefighting activities along milepost 148-157. The highway remains open to through traffic with a pilot car escorting vehicles through mileposts 148-157 from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Yesterday, traffic was temporarily paused while fire activity picked up and fire suppression efforts were underway. Expect delays as firefighters continue removing trees and debris from the roadway and conduct full suppression tactics on the Easy Fire. Please do not stop or pull over between mileposts 148-157. With wildfire and firefighting operations still active, the highway may need to close again on short notice. Be sure to check https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/ for the latest information on State Route 20.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: With continued warming and drying trends fire activity is expected to increase. Expect to see isolated torching, surface and uphill fire spread, and a possible increase in fire behavior along the Mt. Hardy ridgeline. Firefighters will continue work implementing and improving handline along the ridge. Crews will continue utilizing helicopter transportation to access higher elevation areas of the Easy Fire. Night shift operations begin today as crews consider opportunities for strategic firing operations along the north side of the Easy Fire from the ridge to the main fire. Further securing fire spread upslope and preventing addition fire from crossing the ridgeline.
WEATHER: Temperatures will continue to climb today and through the weekend reaching the low to mid 100s. Forecasts predict mostly sunny skies in the morning and then partly cloudy with a 10% chance of thunderstorms by the late afternoon and into the evening. Winds will be west to northwest 1-4 mph and increase to 5-10 mph after 10:00 am.
CLOSURES: The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has closures in place for trails within the fire area: https://bit.ly/EasyFireClosures. This closure includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Pioneer Fire Daily Update July 31, 2024
There will be a community meeting in Manson Wednesday, 5:30 PM at the Manson High School. The meeting will be streamed live on the Pioneer Fire Information Facebook page. Please submit questions in advance to 2024.pioneer@firenet.gov or via Facebook Messenger.
CURRENT SITUATION: Weather conditions remained favorable yesterday with minimal fire progression to the north. Water drops from helicopters and scooper aircraft were used throughout the day between Hazard Creek and Fourmile Creek, removing much of the heat from the fire and slowing fire growth along the lakeshore. Firefighters are using this time of slowed fire activity to continue their work on community protection measures in Stehekin before hot and dry conditions return. Crews continued to work their way up the Stehekin Valley towards Harlequin Bridge, installing sprinklers and hose lays. Felling of hazard trees and work on the community protection lines also continued throughout the Stehekin area. Along the lakeshore, firefighters continued to mop up and patrol around structures between Flick Creek and Fourmile Creek. The southern edge of the fire is still holding in Lone Fir drainage and continues to be monitored for any heat or activity. Crews continued to improve the contingency line along Nelson Ridge, as well as mastication around Oss Peak and work on the shaded fuel break from Cooper Ridge down to the Antilon Lake area. Road improvements in the Black Canyon and Gold Creek areas also continued to maintain ingress and egress for fire equipment.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: To further slow northward progression of the fire, firefighters will be inserted into the lower slope between Fourmile Creek and Hazard Creek to suppress hot spots and coordinate with aviation resources conducting water drops. Crews will continue mopping up and patrolling around structures along the lakeshore. In Stehekin, structure protection work will continue up the valley. Firefighters will continue to improve the community protection line, installing hose lays and sprinklers where needed, while also assessing where existing roads can be used as fireline. South of the fire, and west of Manson, crews will continue preparing indirect contingency lines.
WEATHER AND SMOKE: Today and into the weekend will see increasingly hotter and drier weather conditions, with a chance of thunderstorms starting Thursday. An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for Friday and Saturday. Overnight temperatures will also be hotter and drier. Friday will also bring a period of up lake winds. See Current Smoke Outlook for North Central Washington (airfire.org) for information about smoke and air quality.
EVACUATIONS: Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuation levels remain in effect around the Pioneer Fire. Please contact Chelan County Emergency Management or visit https://t.ly/QoH9w for more information.

Easy Fire Update July 29, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 528 acres*
Start Date: July 17, 2024
Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA
Containment: 0%
Personnel Assigned: 113
Cause: Lightning
Resources Assigned: 3 crews 5 engines
*Acreage estimate is pending updated infrared mapping.
CURRENT SITUATION: Crews continued to improve indirect firelines and set up hoses and sprinklers along the north side of the Easy Fire. Afternoon weather conditions on Sunday allowed firefighters to conduct strategic firing operations with helicopters on the southeast side of the Easy Fire. With the extremely steep terrain, aerial ignitions reduce risk to firefighters on the ground and can be more efficient and effective. The firing operations reduce ground fuels, or vegetation, between the fireline and active fire, reducing fire intensity and improving firefighter ability to stop or slow fire spread.
State Route 20 remains open to through traffic with a pilot car escorting vehicles through mileposts 148-157 from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Expect 30 minutes delays as firefighters continue removing trees and debris from the roadway and conduct full suppression tactics on the Easy Fire. Please do not stop or pull over between mileposts 148-157. With wildfire and firefighting operations still active, the highway may need to close again on short notice. Be sure to check https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/ for the latest information on State Route 20.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: With the expected rain today, crews will hold off on continued strategic firing operations. Firefighters will further improve indirect firelines on both the north and south side of the Easy Fire working up to the Mt. Hardy ridge. Crews will also work to enhance helicopter landing zones in higher elevation areas of the Easy Fire. Firefighters are currently hiking over 3,400 ft of elevation gain to access areas of the Easy Fire. Constructing higher elevation helicopter landing zones will reduce hazards to firefighters, allowing firefighters to more safely and efficiently access and work along Mt. Hardy ridge. Additional helicopter access also improves safety for firefighters in case of a medical emergency.
The Easy Fire has a Temporary Flight Restriction in place for all aircrafts not involved in wildfire suppression operations. Do not fly a personal drone over or near the Easy Fire. Any incursions create a safety hazard to fire aircraft and require air operations to stop.
WEATHER: Temperatures today will in the mid to upper 70s. Sky weather is partly cloudy with occasional light rain and northwest winds 6-10 mph.
