Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires 2021

Afternoon upate on Cedar Creek:Firefighters are continuing to hold the fire line at the 5005 road. Some of the landing piles in these areas have been consumed by fire. Smoke has affected air operations today, but will resume as soon as it is safe to do so. In the northeastern corner, fire has back off the bluff and into the timber stringers within about 300 feet of the fireline. Crews may be working on burnout operations in this area, depending on fire and weather conditions. Overall, 7 structure protection strike teams are in place working during the day and night to continue protection in the neighborhoods along the fire’s edge. Additional hot shot crews are arriving today as well.

There's been a lot of concern about the historic Twenty-Mile Lookout so we thought we'd share these pictures to alleviate concerns. There was an Operations flight that went up today and they went by and got these pictures, they are looking to get out and wrap the building within the next couple of days.

Cub Creek 2 Fire
Morning Update
July 26, 2021

https://www.facebook.com/CubCreek2Fire2 ... 3914359924

Fire Information Line – (509)-593-0574 (8:00 am to 9:00 pm)
For a shareable PDF of this Update, click here: https://drive.google.com/.../1zwuJh4Z.../view...
The fire is burning on Okanogan County Fire District 6 and Washington Department of Natural Resources protected lands and the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.
The Cub Creek 2 Fire is estimated at 44,100 acres with 10% containment.
Overnight, the region saw poor humidity recoveries, which made the fire remain active. Crews remained vigilant with tactical patrols and monitoring throughout the fire area. Hand crews worked through the night and continued with line construction and preparation that had begun during the day.
Today, it is forecasted that in Methow Valley the smoke from the Cedar Creek Fire and Cub Creek 2 Fire will shadow the region, leading to continued poor air quality. The western flank of the fire perimeter remains the top priority, as crews engage in building and strengthening control lines up and out through Sweet Grass Butte into the McLeod fire scar where limited fuels will slow its growth. Contingent on optimal conditions, a strategic firing operation is planned near FS Road 100 and 157 to minimize the narrow roads near FS Road 57. Adjacent to these roads, the fire will be tied into Buck Mountain and Division Mike.
Aviation resources will be limited today, as aircraft are shared between the Cedar Creek Fire and Cub Creek 2 fire. Along the southern portion of the fire crews will reinforce containment lines and continue mop up. Along the ridgetops of Eight Mile and the McLeod burn scar, crews will continue to improve control lines and mop-up. The eastern flank remains active along FS Road 37 into Pebble Creek and firefighters have been engaged in tactical patrols to minimize any further fire spread.
Local resource advisors will continue to provide input to protect natural and historical values at risk.
Residents will continue to see smoke and smoldering or creeping fire behavior near homes, but personnel are actively monitoring those areas. Please only call 911 if flare-ups occur near structures.
Evacuation Information: The Okanogan County Emergency Management (OCEM) evacuations for the Chewuch River drainage remain in effect. Please consult OCEM information resources at okanogancounty.org for current evacuations. Residents leaving Evacuation Level 3 areas should be extremely cautious, drive slowly, and watch for firefighters and firefighting equipment on the roadway.

Smoke Outlook for 7/26 - 7/27
North Central Washington Cedar Creek, Delancy, Cub Creek 2
Smoke
Slope and valley winds will prevail over the fire area today with west winds in the afternoon. Mazama will experience unhealthy to hazardous air in the morning but should improve in the afternoon. Smoke will pool near the fires impacting Winthrop and Twisp with unhealthy to hazardous air quality until late afternoon or evening. Smoke from Canada may impact communities in the Okanogan Valley in the morning with downvalley winds and then experience smoke from the Methow valley later in the day.
Health
The possibility for high levels of smoke to worsen or cause symptoms for people with heart or lung disease, and other preexisting conditions, is a special concern because this can be life-threatening. Sensitive groups include: people with heart diseases, respiratory infections, infants and children, pregnant, people over 65, stroke and heart attack survivors, people with diabetes, people who smoke. If you belong to one of these groups take extra precautions to protect your health.

Cedar Creek Morning Briefing 7/26...

https://www.facebook.com/MazamaFires202 ... 4967645920

Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires
Morning Update
July 26, 2021
Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest
Fire Information Line - Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires: 509-557-0740 (8:00 am to 8:00 pm)
Great Basin Team 1, Incident Commander Evans Kuo, will be assuming management of the Cedar Creek Fire tomorrow morning.
Winthrop, WA — Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in very steep and rocky terrain in heavy down fuels.
Cedar Creek Fire: The fire is currently estimated at 24,647 acres and 11% contained. No infra-red flight occurred last night due to a mechanical issue with the plane so the reported acres of the fire remain the same.
Firefighters connected line in the Wolf Creek drainage and then conducted a planned burn out operation on each side of the creek. Firefighters directly engaged spot fires occurring during the burn out. Hose lay is in place on the north side of Wolf Creek and Dozers continue to clean and strengthen line. Fire managers are also preparing contingency lines farther south of the fire along the 4410 and 4415 Roads. Hand crews are building containment line farther south towards the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness and along its boundary preparing for fire as it moves southwest and south.
The fire is burning actively between Falls Creek and Wolf Creek reaching containment lines along the 5005 Road where firefighters are holding the line. Firefighters secured the eastern portion of the line between Looney Creek and Badger Creek and continued to mop-up and patrol. Between Boulder Creek and Falls Creek, the fire continued to back downslope where resources are conducting holding operations along containment lines.
On the western perimeter, fire continues to slowly back down avalanche chutes along the Silver Star drainage. Fire along State Route 20 between Silver Star Creek and Early Winters Campground has backed down to the road where firefighters continue to patrol the fire’s edge. Fire between Cedar Creek and Looney Creek is slowly progressing downslope where firefighters are securing the line as fire reaches the base of Sandy Butte ridgeline. Aerial resources will continue supporting on-the-ground operations with water and retardant.
The current strategy is to construct containment lines in areas with a high probability of success. The objective is to keep the fire in the higher elevations above the valley and away from values at risk.
Active burning in the fire area may create a column that could drop ash several miles from the fire and will continue as fuel is consumed. Only call 911 if you are seeing burning.
Delancy Fire: Fire activity remains minimal with decreased smoke and movement over the past couple days. The fire is expected to continue to creep and smolder in steep, rocky, sparsely vegetated terrain. Fire managers are evaluating values and risks. Containment opportunities are being actively scouted on the east side up Lost River Road. The fire is being monitored by aircraft. The estimated size of this fire is approximately 223 acres.

Wildfires are a “No Drone Zone” and any drones sighting in a TFR will immediately ground aerial firefighting resources and delay suppression actions.
State Route 20 (North Cascades Highway) remains closed at milepost 185 (7 miles west of Winthrop) to milepost 165 to all traffic due to fire activity.
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has implemented a Fire Emergency Area Closure as of July 22nd, 2021. The Closure includes facilities, roads, and trails. The Closure may be viewed in its entirety at the “Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires 2021” Facebook page.
The Forest Service Fire Emergency Area Closure is separate from the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) closure of portions of State Route 20 and may change or be lifted at different times depending on operational needs. WSDOT is working closely with the Forest Service and Okanogan County to identify where fire activity and firefighting operations warrant closure.
Evacuation Information: The Okanogan County Emergency Management (OCEM) continues to reevaluate evacuation levels. For the most up to date evacuation levels see the OCEM’s website above. Residents entering Evacuation Level 3 areas need to slow down and watch for firefighters and equipment in roadways.
Weather: Valley temperatures are predicted to be in the mid-90’s and in the 80’s on the ridges. Lingering smoke will persist often thick at times and periodically clearing. Westerly winds are expected to increase later Monday with gusts potentially 20 mph. Warm temperatures will continue tomorrow. Relative humidity will remain low at 16-22% in the valley and 18-26% on the ridges.
Air Quality: Air quality will be poor and may improve this afternoon.
Fire Restrictions: Campfire restrictions are in effect. Campfires are prohibited throughout the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, including developed campgrounds and congressionally designated Wilderness — call local ranger district offices for more information. https://tinyurl.com/yby4oysq

6:35pm Sunday, 7/25 (delayed due to evac) Cedar Creek Fire.
Wind at valley bottom (swirling) but estimated 20 mph from W to WNW. 85F and 21% RH.
Possibly last update from me, depending on vagaries of the wind and other factors in my decision making process . Fire at 1/2 mile. No spotting or ash fall yet. But wind velocity exceeds my threshold especially with nightfall coming, proximity of flame front and news of fire line jumped.

Have set 1,200’ of 5/8” hose and all aspect of house are under sprinklers as is the 1,000g propane tank and the generator to run the well. Most 1,000 fuels thoroughly wetted. All yellow jackets and wasps on house killed for firefighter safety. All hand lines laid on ground and charged with nozzles ready for structural defense. Every exterior light is on and doors unlocked in case fire fighters need to retreat from radiant heat.
The dozer and hand lines near the base of Virginian Ridge at Left Fork Wolf Creek may well be tested tonight. Heard from fire and police sources (but unconfirmed) that the fire jumped a dozer line “further up valley.” Fog of war… as there is marked disparity in where this is, or if it’s verified.

Fire moving hours earlier (started around 5’ish) than prior days resulting in more hours of daytime heat and low humidity to advance before cooling temps and humidity put it down to bed.
Slow backing fires along southern valley walls are significantly higher intensity and torching a lot of trees. Candling is continuous. Seeing a little crown to crown ignition mid-slope above the cattle grate on the 5005 (Virginian Ridge road). Winds at top of Virginian Ridge appear to be steady 15-20 with gusts maybe at 30 (visual estimate).
Sikorsky Skycrane and CH-47 Chinook working head of fire trying to cool it to slow it down before it reaches the burnouts done earlier today to protect Sun Mtn and Thompson Ridge. Hope a Very Large Aerial Tanker drops multiple loads of retardant before nightfall.

Upon exiting saw nearly 10 Structural defense crews and over 20 brush trucks inundating the area. State Patrol, WSDFW, USFS, OCSO, NPS going door to door!! I’m sure Twisp and Winthrop LEA in the thick of it too. Huge shout out to our brothers and sister in red and blue!!
Good luck all.

Anybody know if Twisp River is any level? I am operating on level 2, as is the rest of the neighborhood up Myer Cr. We won't wait for anyone to tell us. All I can do is monitor websites. But if anyone knows any more, let us know. Elbow Coulee Rd. is on that list. It burned very well in there in 2015, so a lot of black, punky trees.
Myer Cr.is 6 miles up Twisp River.
Be safe all.

Evening Update...
Aerial resources supported on the ground operations with water and retardant. Crews also continued establishing additional handline following the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness boundary. Aerial resources supported on-the-ground operations. Fire managers are also preparing contingency lines further south of the fire along the 4410 and 4415 Roads.
The active burning of tinder dry fuels may create a column that may drop ash and embers several miles from the fire. Only call 911 if embers cause a fire.
On the western perimeter, fire continues to slowly back down avalanche chutes along the Silver Star drainage. The Cub Creek 2 Fire is estimated at 43,739 acres (acre reduction was due to day time mapping) with 10% containment.
Today, the western flank of the fire was active, but crews were able to reinforce control lines. Crews began a strategic firing operation below Ramsey Peak using existing roads and dozer lines to minimize potential growth out in this area. The westerly winds provided firefighters an opportunity to strengthen and bolster the control lines on the western flank. Aviation resources were successful at providing retardant drops along the western portion of the fire because the winds pushed the smoke out of this area. Along the southern portion of the fire, crews were successful at reinforcing containment line and continuing mop up.
Along FS Roads 100 and 157, crews continue to work to tie in Buck Mountain with Division Mike. Cub Pass continues to challenge crews because the dead and down timber and dry fuels. Along the ridgetops of Eight Mile and the McLeod burn scar, crews have begun improving control lines, as well as beginning mop-up.

Cub Creek 2 Fire-2021

July 25 6:00 p.m. Operations Update
Crews worked most of the day along the 5010 road right on Brevicomis Creek by the 637 Spur, lighting a very small strategic burn to secure the cabins there. The burn was only about 1200 feet long and its all cleaned up now.
Other good news, firefighters managed to secure a mobile retardant plant today; it's at Pearrygin Lake. A mobile plant allows retardant to be moved closer to where its needed, eliminating long runs to dip.
If you have an interest in the Goat Peak Lookout it was wrapped by a smokejumper with a protective material, back on July 21st and its fine at this time.
And crews and engines are continuing to do tactical patrols and mop up in the southern section of the fire.
