Easy Fire Update July 27, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 410 acres
Start Date: July 17, 2024
Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA
Containment: 0%
Personnel Assigned: 107
Cause: Lightning
Resources Assigned: 2 crews 5 engines
CURRENT SITUATION: After a multiday closure due to the Easy Fire, State Route 20 re-opened to through traffic yesterday afternoon. A pilot car will escort vehicles through mileposts 148-157 from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Expect 30 minutes delays as firefighters continue removing trees and debris from the roadway and conduct full suppression tactics on the Easy Fire. Please do not stop or pull over between mileposts 148-157. With wildfire and firefighting operations still active, the highway may need to close again on short notice. Be sure to check https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/ for the latest information on State Route 20.
Fire activity on Friday was minimal and within the current fire footprint. Firefighters continued to widen indirect firelines and successfully installed and tested sprinkler systems on both the south and north side of the Easy Fire. Additionally, crews scouted for opportunities to conduct strategic firing operations on the south side of the fire to burn out vegetation between the fire and constructed firelines.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Pending favorable weather conditions, crews may conduct strategic firing operations on the south east side of Easy Fire using aircraft. Air ignitions will use Plastic Sphere Dispensers (PSD) to conduct burning operations. Firing tactics utilizing aviation can reduce risk to firefighters on the ground working in steep terrain and can cover more ground than a human can on foot. Strategic firing operations create a more controllable slow-moving fire by reducing ground fuels, or vegetation. Crews will also continue working to bolster indirect firelines and check sprinkler systems on both the north and south side of the Easy Fire.
The Easy Fire has a Temporary Flight Restriction in place for all aircrafts not involved in wildfire suppression operations. Do not fly a personal drone over or near the Easy Fire. Any incursions create a safety hazard to fire aircraft and require air operations to stop.
WEATHER: Temperatures today will cool slightly with highs in the low to mid 80s. Sky weather is mostly clear in the morning with partly cloudy conditions in the afternoon and a 10% chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Winds will increase slightly with a northwest direction around 10-14 mph.
CLOSURES: The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has closures in place for trails within the fire area: https://bit.ly/EasyFireClosures. This closure includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Campfires are prohibited. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place over the fire: https://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_4_6779.html. Unauthorized drone activity is prohibited under the TFR.
EVACUATIONS: There are no evacuations in place for the Easy Fire. Anyone recreating in the area should be vigilant about being aware of surroundings and stay out of closed areas.

WSDOT

SR 20 NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY IS OFFICIALLY OPEN AGAIN!
As of 1 p.m. Friday, July 26, State Route 20 North Cascades Highway has reopened near Granite Creek (mileposts 148-157), following a multiday closure due to fire activity from the Easy Fire.
Fire crews have been removing trees and brush adjacent to the highway and will continue fire migration work in the area.
That means flagger-controlled traffic and pilot cars from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Expect delays of 30 minutes to allow fire crews to safely remove trees and brush from the roadway.
Please do not pull of the highway between mileposts 148 and 157 and remain alert for fire response and maintenance crews throughout the mountain passes. There are no detours on Forest Service roads. Never pass flaggers or pilot cars.
We know many of you are eager for the roadway to reopen, but please be courteous and look out for each other. The last thing anyone wants is a crash that closes the highway again because someone was traveling carelessly, too fast or unaware of their surroundings.
PLEASE NOTE: In order to ensure you aren't getting outdated information, this the final NEW post we will make about SR 20 North Cascades Highway open/close status due to Easy Fire. Any additional updates will be added to THIS post, accompanied by a date and timestamp. We will pin this post to the top of our Facebook page for easy reference.

Size: 397 acres
Start Date: July 17, 2024
Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA
Containment: 0%
Personnel Assigned: 95
Cause: Lightning
Resources Assigned: 2 crews 5 engines
CURRENT SITUATION: On Wednesday, an uptick in winds with gusts up to 18-20 mph increased fire activity including individual trees torching within the fire area. The fire is burning in large dense timber, abundant dead trees, and ground vegetation on extremely steep terrain. The fire continues to slowly progress on the north and south side while creeping down slope towards State Route 20 (SR 20) North Cascades Highway.
Yesterday helicopters dropped water to slow the spread of the fire while ground crews constructed fire line. The fire is just above State Route 20 and rolling rock, falling trees, and active fire near the highway continues to necessitate a closure on State Route 20. The closure is in place to protect the public from hazards associated with the fire as well as fire suppression activities. Crews are felling dead trees between the active fire edge and State Route 20 to reduce fire spread toward the highway. Firefighters, in conjunction with Washington Department of Transportation, are working to remove fallen trees and debris from State Route 20 and are conducting daily assessments of road conditions and fire behavior.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Firefighters continue to fall trees below and parallel State Route 20 and are working to reinforce indirect firelines on the Easy Fire. Crews will also clear fallen trees and debris across State Route 20 with assistance from Washington Department of Transportation. Additionally, firefighters will maintain utilizing helicopters for water bucket drops if weather conditions allow. Operations to wrap Mebee Lookout Tower are under consideration again due to increased fire activity on the north side of Easy Fire. Crews are scouting helispot locations to establish a landing zone for helicopters to deliver supplies for structure protection operations on Mebee Lookout Tower.
WEATHER: Temperatures tomorrow will continue to cool with highs in the mid to upper 70s. Easy Fire Update July 24, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 397 acres
Start Date: July 17, 2024
Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA
Containment: 0%
Personnel Assigned: 118
Cause: Lightning
Resources Assigned: 3 crews 3 engines
CURRENT SITUATION: Cooler temperatures on Tuesday reduced fire behavior and overall fire growth on the Easy Fire in the morning. Fire activity increased Tuesday night producing single and group tree torching along with a visible plume of smoke. The fire is burning in extremely steep terrain with large dense timber, abundant dead trees and ground vegetation. The fire continues to move slowly down slope towards State Route 20 (SR 20) North Cascades Highway.
Yesterday, helicopters continued to assist firefighters with water bucket drops to slow the spread of the fire. Crews set up structure protection sprinkler systems around Easy Pass Trailhead and established sites to provide water for containment line hoses. Firefighters also constructed containment lines connecting into a previous burn scar on the northern side of the Easy Fire. Rolling rock, falling trees, and active fire near the highway continues to necessitate a closure on SR 20 to protect the public from hazards associated with fire behavior and suppression tactics. Crews are felling dead trees between the active fire edge and SR 20 to reduce the fire spread toward the highway.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Firefighters will bolster the indirect fireline on the northern section of Easy Fire. Crews may conduct chipping operations to remove fallen trees across State Route 20. Additionally, firefighters will continue felling dead trees above and parallel to State Route 20 which will help with removing hazards to the highway.
WEATHER: Temperatures tomorrow will continue to cool with highs in the high 80s and low 90s with mild Northwest winds around 6mph. Today will be drier then yesterday, however it is expected cooler and moist air will move over the fire tomorrow.
EVACUATIONS: There are no evacuations in place for the Easy Fire. Anyone recreating in the area should be vigilant about being aware of surroundings and stay out of closed areas. Please visit https://t.ly/QoH9w for more information about evacuation levels.

Easy Fire Update July 23, 2024
CURRENT SITUATION: Easy Fire is burning in large dense timber with abundant dead trees and extensive ground vegetation. The terrain is extremely steep. Continued hot, dry, and unstable weather conditions on Monday led to very active fire behavior including torching, or fire climbing from the ground to the tops of trees. Short range spotting, where embers are cast out in front of the fire, also contributed to fire spread. Easy Fire extends over Mt. Hardy, threatening the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), while also moving down slope toward State Route 20 (SR 20) North Cascades Highway.
While steep slopes contribute to fire suppression challenges, crews are utilizing full suppression tactics that have the highest likelihood for success while mitigating risks to firefighters and the public.
Rolling rock, falling trees, and active fire near the highway necessitates the closure on SR 20 to protect the public from hazards associated with fire behavior and suppression tactics. Crews are felling dead trees between the active fire edge and State Route 20 to help limit fire spread toward the highway. Helicopters assisted firefighters on Monday with water bucket drops to slow the spread of Easy Fire. Crews are actively establishing control lines and installing sprinkler systems.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Extreme terrain prevents direct attack on the Easy Fire. Firefighters will continue identifying and improving indirect firelines that take advantage of natural barriers such as avalanche chutes and historical burn scars. Ground crews will continue felling dead trees above and parallel State Route 20 to reduce hazards and vegetation that serves as fuel for the fire. Firefighters are bolstering control lines and continuing water bucket drops. Additionally, crews may start structure protection work for the historic Mebee Lookout Tower.
WEATHER: A westside marine layer brought higher humidity to the fire area overnight. There is dry air immediately above the marine layer, so as it mixes throughout the day, conditions will change. With the cooler temperatures, strong wind gusts as high as 26 miles per hour are predicted.
EVACUATIONS: There are no evacuations in place for the Easy Fire. Anyone recreating in the area should be vigilant about being aware of surroundings and stay out of closed areas. Please visit https://t.ly/QoH9w for more information about evacuation levels.
CLOSURES: State Route 20 is closed in both directions between Granite Creek (MP 148) and Easy Pass Trailhead (MP 157).

Easy Fire Update for July 22, 2024
Note: The Pioneer Fire Update is posted separately.

CURRENT SITUATION: Easy Fire is burning in dense timber and extremely steep terrain. The fire is backing and flanking with short upslope runs, single tree torching, and short-range spotting. The steep slopes with continuous timber contribute to difficulty with fire suppression. Easy fire is a full suppression fire and firefighters are utilizing strategies and tactics that provide the highest likelihood for success while mitigating risks to firefighters and the public. The Easy Fire extends over Mt. Hardy, threatening the Pacific Crest Trail, while also moving down slope toward State Route 20 (SR 20) North Cascades Highway.

STATE ROUTE 20 is closed in both directions between Granite Creek (MP 148) and Easy Pass Trailhead (MP 157). Ground crews are removing dead trees between the active fire edge and SR 20 to help limit fire spread in that direction. This work, along with the very active fire behavior, necessitates a closure to protect the public from hazards like falling trees or rocks along with fire growth.
Helicopters assisted firefighters Sunday morning with water bucket drops to slow the spread of Easy Fire. Hot, dry, and unstable weather conditions led to very active burning and visible smoke columns from the Easy Fire during the afternoon and evening.

TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Extreme terrain prevents direct attack. Instead, firefighters are identifying and establishing indirect firelines that take advantage of natural barriers such as avalanche chutes. Firefighters will continue snagging operations above and parallel Highway 20 and continue work to establish safe access to the right and left flanks of Easy Fire. Crews are actively establishing fireline and setting up sprinkler systems.

WEATHER: Critical weather conditions continue to contribute to very active fire behavior. The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning through Monday at 8 pm. A Red Flag Warning is in place for hot dry, and unstable conditions today. Temperatures will remain in the upper 90s to low 100s with cooling expected early next week.

EVACUATIONS: There are no evacuations in place for the Easy Fire. Anyone recreating in the area should be vigilant about being aware of surroundings and stay out of closed areas. Please visit https://t.ly/QoH9w for more information about evacuation levels.

FOREST CLOSURE: The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has closures in place for trails within the fire area: https://bit.ly/EasyFireClosures. Campfires are prohibited. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place over the fire: https://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_4_6779.html. Unauthorized drone activity is prohibited under the TFR.
